Welcome to Hedgerow & Flint
The Moment of Certainty
Every self-build story has a defining moment where a plot of land transitions from a possibility to a certainty. For us, that moment was the crunch of a Christmas Pippin apple picked from our own trees.
For years, we searched for the perfect canvas to bring our design and build philosophies together. Like many, we faced setbacks along the way, including losing a plot we truly thought was 'the one' when the first Covid lockdown came into force - the week we were due to exchange! As small business owners it felt too risky.
What felt like a loss was actually fortuitous, as it led us to our little yellow cottage deep in the Suffolk countryside, which has been a huge inspiration to us and an absolute joy to live in.
Our search eventually led us to a forgotten, old Suffolk fruit farm. Framed by a magnificent, ancient hedgerow and dotted with mature fruit trees, the land held a quiet, timeless energy. Standing among the trees, picking that first apple, we knew the years of waiting had been worth it. We had found our home.
Why This Journal Exists
A self-build is never a solo endeavour; it is a massive collaboration of minds, hands, and craftsmanship.
This Journal is our digital notebook. Over the coming months—as we navigate the final planning stages and look toward breaking ground next spring—we will be using this space to document the design process through to the build and beyond.
But more than that, this page is a space to celebrate the industry we love. We want to shine a spotlight on the exceptional suppliers, independent makers, and passionate craftsmen we have collaborated with over our years in the design and construction industry. We want to introduce you to the people you don’t usually get to meet.
So thank you for joining us at the very beginning of Hedgerow & Flint. Please do follow our diary over on Instagram - @hedgerow_and_flint and join our journal updates below.
